The Year of the Ox will be dominated by the element of earth and the number eight, the 20-year period we are in now,  which in Chinese is a homonym for expansion and prosperity, and which represents respect and equality, awards, power and money,” says Wong.  It will be one of honesty, transparency and discipline – all required for survival during the economic slowdown.  New ventures and untested strategies should wait until next year (of the Tiger), while the rule of thumb in 2009 should be diligence, hard work, returning to the basics, such as our core values, thrift, putting your life in order, becoming grounded again and using  tried and true methods that have served us well through difficult times in the past.

Avoid risk and speculation and lose that greed, conspicuous consumption and sense of entitlement that has been so pervasive in your lives.  If the shock of the financial meltdown hasn’t brought you down to earth, you will surely suffer.  It’s time for a serious reality check about what is really important in your life – faith, family and friends, not material wealth or possessions.

This Year of the Ox (1/26/09-2/14/10) will require wisdom and restraint regarding finances and being considerate of others. There are lessons for the younger generations to be learned from the voices and experiences of their parents and grandparents, who survived WWII, Vietnam War, the Great Depression, and turbulent 1960s with its student demonstrations, civil rights , ecology and feminist movements.

For business, industry, politicians, world leaders and all the rest of us- responsibility will reign throughout 2009, to ourselves, our family, our friends and loved ones.  Put your house and home and affairs in order.  Clean up clutter and divest yourself of clutter and old stuff, including anything that is interfering with progress in your life, such as non-productive activities, toxic people and negative people.

It is time to roll up your shirtsleeves and get back down to work, perhaps even rebuilding or re-engineering your stalled or unsuccessful business, but don’t jump into any new ventures. Return to providing the best customer service ever to keep those you have.  This strategy can also serve you well as other businesses fail, because you’ll be there to serve those who may be left in the lurch, and they will be surprised and grateful.

Those among you who are willing to work hard will deserve to be rewarded. The millions of people throughout the world who have had the courage, stamina, perseverance and resourcefulness to stay the course are the ones who have risen above their mediocre counterparts.  Avoid using shortcuts and quick-money schemes.  If it’s too good to be true, it isn’t and you will be the loser.

The element of fire generates the earth element, so look for possibilities in energy professions, mining, any other fields of endeavor involving earth and fire.  Lack of communication will prove to be a stumbling block, but be patient and stay true to your moral compass and work ethics.  Strengthening foundations that tackle  society’s ills will dominate: teachers, dentist, doctors, engineers, politicians, farmers, nurses, technicians – those upon the infrastructure and our very existence depend, many of whom have  been overlooked in the recent past.

Be true to yourself and your core values and you’ll weather out this year which will see an upswing in the second half of the year and into 2010 when the Year of the Tiger arrives on February 14, 2010.

What the Year of the Earth Ox Holds
for Your Zodiac Sign

YEAR OF THE RAT
A satisfying year that brings good luck that accompanies projects started last year, but you’ll have to work hard for your money. Manage the stress that comes with the responsibility and prosperity. Expect happy events or benefits you might reap from others’ good fortune.

YEAR OF THE OX
Don’t sweat the small or let the little glitches get you down as it’ll be a good year, especially for a new partnership (but do your due diligence) or getting married.  You’ll be occupied more with your family or involved with children.

YEAR OF THE TIGER
Your stubbornness and temper may hamper progress so avoid challenging authority or the system.

Things will work out if you work hard, are serious and don’t start any new ventures. Patience will bring its own rewards by the end of the year and beyond.

YEAR OF THE RABBIT/HARE
This may be a trying year as you work hard without seeing positive results and may become frustrated. There may be separation, loss, or health problems.  Delay any moves changes in the status quo or your environment.  Hang it there and persevere.

A good year in store after being passed over for promotion, opportunities or resources in the past few years.  Things will come together for you with your hard work, intuition or hunches paving the way to prosperity, career advancement or a new business, profession, or line of work.
